“Police Debunk Viral Video of Alleged Robbery at Traffic Stop Point, Identify Mischief Makers”

The Nigeria Police Force has dismissed a viral video circulating on social media, which purportedly shows motorists being harassed and robbed by armed individuals at a traffic stop point in Abuja, Nigeria.

After conducting a thorough digital forensics analysis, the NPF-National Cyber Crime Centre (NPF-NCCC) determined that the incident actually occurred in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The video, originally posted by an individual from South Africa on April 22, 2024, was reposted by mischief makers who falsely claimed that the incident took place in Abuja, causing widespread panic and disinformation.

The Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered a comprehensive investigation to identify and sanction those responsible for spreading this false information.

The IGP emphasized the importance of accurate information dissemination and urged the public to exercise caution and verify the authenticity of videos and news circulating on social media platforms, as misleading contents can cause unnecessary fear and panic. The Police remains committed to combating misinformation and disinformation to ensure public safety and security.
